the premise: a group of 20-something girls decide it would be fun to mail their favorite books to each other in an attempt to be well-read...it's like being pen-pals, only passing on a letter that was written by somebody else...

I'm halfway through at the moment and really enjoying Animal Dreams. In the last chapter I read, Codi gets a letter from Hallie that briefly discusses the heartless gunning down of three village girls in nicaragua by Nat'l Guard soldiers in a US helicopter. Hallie begs Codi to check the US news and find out what's being reported. Codi watches for news of the incident which comes 3 days later and is candycoated making the assassins out to be from someplace in South America and just plain crazy. Even though Codi knows the truth she admits to feeling comforted by the lie. I thought that was pretty prolific. Even when I know the truth, a lie can be comforting to me too.
um. i had to skip it. but i liked the first fifty pages...so...i'll hopefully read it someday.
I liked how this book had an interesting plot yet brought up ethical issues such as American involvement in Central America, cock fighting, and what it means to be a good teacher.
