the premise: a group of 20-something girls decide it would be fun to mail their favorite books to each other in an attempt to be well-read...it's like being pen-pals, only passing on a letter that was written by somebody else...

I don't think I'm allowed to post here, but since I found it, I'm posting anyway.
I would like to say that Safely Home is one of the most amazing and entertaining books I've read. From a literary standpoint, I wouldn't call it earth shattering. However, from an "ability to change one's perspective" standpoint, I find it life-altering. For a fiction book based on Biblical events and events of the current church abroad, I give it a 5 out of 5.
So there. I've pirated your site and left my comment.
Forgot a haiku:
Stronger faith than mine
Shows the real reason to live
Serious change of heart
Drew, even though you are a renegade commenter, I appreciate your thoughts and perspective (and the fact that you even wrote a haiuku!)
I, too, was really moved as well as educated by this book. Previous to reading Safely Home, I knew that intense persecution is a reality in present-day China, but Alcorn's narrative helped to put "faces" on the martyrs and forced me to consider my own "safe" Christianity in contrast with theirs, for which they are hunted and punished but still zealous about sharing.
And although each author puts their own imagination's spin on heaven (they almost have to, since Scripture gives us a foundation and then says that "no eye has seen nor has any ear heard" of what awaits us there) I appreciated the way Alcorn portrayed heaven's "community of martyrs." It is a call for our utmost respect and our consistent prayers.
my haiku:
Persecution fuels
the gospel's spread in China.
Vivid portrait.
I don't know if the copy you guys have has the picture in the front, but here's a link: http://www.christcenteredmall.com/stores/art/dicianni/safely-home.jpg. I think the picture was one of the most impactful parts of the story. Since it's in the front of the book, there's probably no harm in looking at the picture before reading. Amazing...
I'm quite bummed that my copy...along with just about every other book I own...was destroyed in our recent flood. Taking donations if you have duplicate books ;-)
